Meet the Directors

Madeleine Kaiser, Director

I have been the GPYC Summer Day Camp director since 2018 and am ecstatic to be back again for my fourth summer! I have been a teacher since 2013 and have had the privilege of working with kids of all ages over the years. I currently am a second grade teacher at Our Lady Star of the Sea, where I also am the Confirmation Coordinator for 7th and 8th grade.

I have a passion for learning, being active, and building a positive community with those around me. I hope to share those values with our campers and am so grateful to be reminded daily of the simplicity of summer through the eyes of children.

Vita Aluia, Assistant Director

Hello, everyone! My name is Vita Aluia and I am excited to join the GPYC Summer Camp team this year. Currently, I am a kindergarten teacher at Our Lady Star of the Sea, where I also coach 7th and 8th grade girls volleyball.

This summer, I am looking forward to sharing my love of community, growth, and adventure with each camper. I am excited to meet everyone!

Daily Schedule

Drop-Off on the Playground

*Rain-in case of rain, please drop your child off at the main building front desk.  We will then bring them to their room location.

8:00-8:30 Before Care

8:30-9:00 Check-In

9:00-12:00 Snack and Camp Rotations Begin

This varies daily but includes crafts, playground, splashpad, tennis, bowling, swim, bocce ball, yard games, movies, special events, etc.

*We ask that campers arrive promptly by 9:00. Our camper rotations visit many areas of the club and we wouldn’t want campers to miss fun events! This also makes it more efficient for our staff to run their groups properly. If for some reason you need to drop your child off at a later time, please contact Madeleine Kaiser via text at 313.929.9917 so arrangements can be made.

12:00        Lunch

12:30        AM ONLY Pick-up on the East Lawn (next to the pool)

12:30-1:00    Down Time

Down Time: Children are encouraged to rest and recharge after eating. Being in the heat all day can be exhausting. Many campers in the past have enjoyed bringing books, notebooks, coloring materials, etc. for this time. Counselors will also lead small activities during this time. Please remind your child that if they bring something to camp, it shouldn’t be shared with other campers.

1:00        PM Check-in & Lunch on the East Lawn

1:00-1:15    East Lawn Activities

1:15-4:30    Camp Rotations (see above for what camp rotations consist of)

4:30-5:00    Full Day/PM Pick-Up at the Playground

5:00-5:30    After Care at the Playground

COVID-19 Response

Our number one priority is keeping campers, families, and staff safe and healthy.  We are running our camp according to the guidelines from the State of Michigan.

COVID-19 Guidelines:

  • Campers and unvaccinated staff are required to wear masks while indoors until July 1, 2021.

  • Campers will receive a Health Screening prior to checking in for the day.

  • If symptoms appear while at camp, they will be screened and isolated until they can be picked up.

  • Campers will be socially distanced as feasible both indoors and outdoors.  Campers will be placed in cohort groups and visit different areas of the club in shifts.

  • Proper cleaning procedures will take place.

  • For more specific guidelines, please view this response document

Lunch and Snack

Lunch Menu
*Lunch and AM/PM snacks will be provided daily.  Please notify us if your child has an allergy.  Campers are also welcome to bring their own, but please note that we do not have a refrigerator to store them in. Please note the menu is subject to change.

What to Wear & Bring

 *Please label all belongings*

  • Please dress for comfort and with the weather in mind
  • Camp t-shirts should be worn daily. This helps to keep our campers safe and easy to identify as our group! Five shirts will be provided on the first day of camp
  • Bathing suits should be worn underneath clothing at arrival
  • Sunscreen packed and applied before camp. This means less prep time and more camp fun time! Sunscreen will be reapplied throughout the day. Spray sunscreen is ideal for less counselor to camper contact. Teaching your child how to apply their own sunscreen is important as well
  • Water bottle
  • Hat
  • Towel
  • Plastic bag (for wet bathing suit and towel)
  • Undergarments for after the pool
  • Sandals with backs for the pool/splashpad. No flip flops please
  • Athletic shoes for the playground and field games. Campers will not be allowed on the playscape without closed sandals or athletic shoes.
  • Tennis racquet. We do not provide these.

Lessons

Some campers are signed up for additional lessons in different departments of the club while day camp is still running. If your child has these lessons, please notify Madeleine Kaiser ASAP via email so we can coordinate with the other departments who will drop-off/pick-up your child for their lessons.
